BATTLE OF THE ORANGES - Ivrea, Italy

[..] Culture Appreciation // Photo Journalism

Ivrea today is best known for its peculiar traditional carnival. The core celebration is based on a locally famous Battle of the oranges. This involves some thousands of townspeople, divided into nine combat teams, who throw oranges at each other - with considerable violence - during the traditional carnival days: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The carnival takes place in February: it ends the night of "Fat Tuesday" with a solemn funeral. Traditionally, at the end of the silent march that closes the carnival the "Prefect" says goodbye to everyone with the classical phrase "See you next Fat Tuesday at 1 pm."

One of the citizens is elected Mugnaia. The legend has that a miller's daughter (a "Mugnaia") once refused to accept the "right" of the local duke to spend a night with each newly wed woman and chopped his head off. Today the carriages represent the duke's guard and the orange throwers the revolutionaries. Spectators are not allowed to throw oranges, but visitors are allowed to enlist in the teams. If they wear a red hat they are considered part of the revolutionaries and will not have oranges thrown at them.

Before oranges were thrown they used apples. Later, oranges came to represent the duke's chopped off head. The origin of the tradition to throw oranges is not well understood, particularly as oranges do not grow in the foothills of the Italian Alps and must be imported from Sicily. In 1994 an estimate of 265.000 kilograms of oranges were brought to the city, mainly coming from the leftovers of the winter crop in southern Italy.

Once in a lullaby ..

I have quite the imaginagtion. Well, its not that great compared to the students of the academy, but quite up there amongst my friends and peers. I've been daydreaming a lot lately. Just staring out the window, thinking. Thinking about clouds and dreamy castles over the rainbow. Dreaming about marrying Edward Cullen (Hahaha). Dreaming about faeries and pixies. Dreaming about magical kingdoms, dark jungles full of panthers, medieval knights, and vast open meadows of daisies. Speaking of which, I really want to head up to that park near Burton High School. Its very secluded and full of hiking trails. A great photo opp. A part of me want to go up hiking by myself; just so I have relaxing time just for me. The other part wants me to bring along a friend; someone to share it with (But who? I dont have anyone SUPER special to go with. Boo..) Im just rambling on.

Feeding Bonny - She's such a picky baby ...

Our group was finally reunited the other day. Well sort of; we're still missing a few, but it was an awesome time. Praise God. We took our adventures to the beach. Frolic around like idiots for a while, take some snazzy pictures, talked and catch up on news. Good times. But here comes the funny part, I had to stuff seven people into a tiny five-seated car. Quite interesting if I do say so myself. They totally weighted down the car. I could barely go up with hill without flooring it. We had lunch at Banana Island (One of my faves). I had to feed Bonny tho. Shes such a picky baby; wouldn't take anything I give her. In the end, she got her nutrients (through force). Hahaha. That ends my day. I promise to never write a 'So today I did this' entry. Well at least not for a long time.

Mainstream media stinks

Mainstream media stinks! I wake up this morning (or well, afternoon), turn on the TV and get ghetto-booty-grinding-hiphop music on every channel. Okay not every channel, I exaggerated; but what the flip man! I'm sick and tired of hearing how great these artists, such as Rihanna and Chris Brown, are. You cant image how many times I've heard Umbrella or that Soulja Boy song. I guess it was fun the first time; just listening to something new and entertaining. But its everywhere I tell you! Everywhere! Very annoying ... I'd like to see them broadcast or pay tribute to something like underground music or even classical music. Speaking of classical, lets listen to some shall we. Claire De Lune was written by french composer Claude Debussy in 1903. Very popular in the classical world and has been mentioned in various films such as Fantasia and Atonement. Enjoy kids!

Target Models ..

[...] Went to Serramonte with Trina, Kim (My boyfriend trapped in a woman's body), & Connie. We ate baked potatoes from The Great Steak! I haven't had one in such a long time. It was delicious!! And then we wandered the rest of the day. Just wasting time. We went to the pet store there and I fell in love with the adorable bunnies there. Especially this grey one. He was so sassy and I loved it. He's much more playful than the other ones. I think the owners got annoyed with us. We were messing around in there a lot. Loitering so to speak. Kekeke.
